What Is Yellow Fever?
The yellow fever virus is found mainly in tropical and subtropical regions of Africa and South America. U.S. travelers area very rarely infected with yellow fever, according to the CDC.
The virus is transmitted by infected mosquitos, and most people do not experience any symptoms or they are very mild.
Symptoms Of Yellow Fever
Those who do experience symptoms can have:
- chills
- fever
- headache
- back pain and body aches
- nausea and vomiting
- weakness and fatigue.
- About 15 percent of people develop a more severe form of the disease, which includes high fever, jaundice, bleeding, shock and failure of organs.
Yellow Fever Recommendations
Per the CDC: “Yellow fever vaccination is generally not recommended in areas where there is low potential for yellow fever virus exposure (no human cases of yellow fever ever reported and evidence to suggest only low levels of yellow fever virus transmission in the past). However, vaccination might be considered for a small subset of travelers to these areas who are at increased risk of exposure to mosquitoes or are unable to avoid mosquito bites. When considering vaccination, any traveler must take into account the risk of being infected with yellow fever virus, country entry requirements, and individual risk factors (e.g., age, immune status) for serious vaccine-associated adverse events.”
